Education:

Ph.D. - Entomology, University of Wisconsin (1984)
M.S. - Entomology, Mississippi State University (1980)
B.S. - Agronomy, University of Arizona (1977)

Research Interests:

My research focus is a systems approach to Integrated Pest Management (IPM) that supports sustainable vegetable and fruit production in the upper Midwest. Both basic and applied research is conducted to implement IPM programs for a variety of crops, including: sweet corn, cabbage, snap bean, cucurbits, and wine grapes. Current areas of interest include long-term assessment of transgenic, Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), corn for European corn borer, corn earworm and western bean cutworm IPM; development and validation of practical pest sampling plans; integration of reduced-risk insecticides with native parasitic wasps for management of Lepidopteran pests; invasive species and IPM; and development of a risk-based framework for IPM.

Teaching/Extension Interests:

With my extension appointment, my primary teaching activity is focused toward growers, agricultural professionals, crop consultants, and vegetable processing company representatives. Our VegEdge site includes more information about the Vegetable IPM Program. I also participate in our graduate curricula by participating in the NSF-funded Graduate Program, Risk Analysis of Introduced Species and Genotypes.

International Interests:

I am active in several international activities, including the University of Minnesota’s Harvest Choice project. I serve as Co-Editor for Radcliffe's World IPM Textbook; with over 67 chapters (English, Spanish), this site is an interactive resource for teaching IPM worldwide. I have also participated in several international meetings regarding IPM challenges, and/or the use of GM Crops in various countries, including: Australia, Belgium, Columbia, Denmark, England, Germany, Ireland, Kenya, Mexico, South Africa, and Switzerland. For more information about international opportunities within our College, go to the CFANS International Programs office webpage.
