Why Insects?

Insects are without a doubt the most successful group of organisms in both an ecological and evolutionary scales. They have a myriad of morphological and behavioral adaptations to cope with the environment they inhabit in the most impressive ways. All these features will never cease to amaze me.

Why University of Minnesota?

I applied to the Entomology graduate program at the U because it is one of the top Entomology graduate programs in the US. Its top-notch faculty will certainly help me improve as a scientist, expand the focus of my research and translate it into publications. The excellent facilities at the University of Minnesota also provide great opportunities to conduct state-of-the-art research. Furthermore, my advisor, Dr. Ralph Holzenthal, is one of the most relevant authorities on Neotropical caddisflies systematics, with a well-established research program that have resulted in numerous systematics revisions and the description of a great number of new species from the Neotropics. His lab’s focus on revisionary systematics is the ideal place to continue with my research and his interest on caddisfly biodiversity on the Andes heavily overlaps with my research interests.

Aspirations

I would like to finish my M.S. degree and start a Ph.D. program here or elsewhere so I can get more opportunities to get a research-teaching position in a University so I can contribute to the knowledge of my the Peruvian caddisfly fauna and to the management of aquatic resources in my country.

Other interests/hobbies

I really like reading fiction novels, manga and comic books; watching movies and listening to music. I also like playing soccer as much as I can and obviously, collecting with lights near a remote forested stream is another of my favorite activities; it helps me connect with nature in a really special way.
