Resources for Week 3, February 2, 4, 6

The winged insects, including the "Palaeoptera" and the Neoptera

REQUIRED READING
Grimaldi & Engel, Chapter 6, pp 155-160.

Tree of Life Pterygota pages.

Ephemeroptera

REQUIRED READING
Grimaldi & Engel, Chapter 6, pp 160-173.

Tree of Life Ephemeroptera pages [not much posted yet except some images and references.]

FYI

Ephemeroptera Galactica
and Mayfly Central are two excellent web sites containing information about mayflies. The checklists of species, literature references, and directory of workers are especially valuable, but there does not seem to be a correspondingly strong image database.

Odonata

REQUIRED READING
Grimaldi & Engel, Chapter 6, pp 173-187.

Tree of Life Odonata pages [This is an excellent set of ToL pages on dragonflies and damselflies, but it does not yet include information on the phylogeny of the subgroups of odonates.]

!!! Characters for identyfing Odonata families !!!

FYI
There is an almost overwhelming number of odonate sites on the internet. Check out especially the web sites and their included links from the major professional organizations, including the Worldwide Dragonfly Association, Societas Internationalis Odonatologica, and the International Odonate Research Institute. There is a site on odonate phylogenetic relationships, but the classification is highly technical and contains many, many fossil taxa. Not recommended for the uninitiated!
Roy Beckemeyer has provided a very nice image gallery of scanned odonate specimens which shows wing venation and other taxonomic characters used in identification. As you explore the internet for information on Odonata, let me know of any other good sites. NEW: Minnesota Odonate Survey Project.
