Research interests:

My research interest is on Integrated Pest Management (IPM), specifically the development of pest management programs to control target insect pests and to conserve natural enemies.  To achieve this goal, my research focuses on reduction of insecticide use by the development of sampling plans and thresholds, and the determination of crop and insect pest phenologies as a way to increase the efficacy of control options (e.g., chemical, biological, and behavioral control).  In addition, my research also centers on the reduction of insecticide toxicity by the evaluation of insecticide selectivity to natural enemies as a component of the Conservation Biological Control.

To accomplish this, I have worked with insect pests from tomato, cabbage, and coffee systems, in Brazil, and the multicolored Asian lady beetle, Harmonia axyridis (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), in soybeans, sweet corn, and wine grapes in Minnesota, USA.  The positive and negative impacts of the multicolored Asian lady beetle in agriculture have generated interesting research projects under the Conservation Biological Control scope, and as an example of the development of an IPM program for new insect pests.  In addition, I am also interested in the behavioral ecology of this lady beetle and in the modification of its behavior as a mean to manage this insect in fruit production systems and urban areas.  Finally, during my PhD I have developed special interest in applied biostatistics including standard statistical analysis such as ANOVA, ANCOVA, and linear regression, or more sophisticated approaches such as repeated measures analysis of variance and categorical data analysis (e.g., logistic regression).
