Applying: Funding

The Department of Entomology accepts students with high academic potential when funding is available through individual faculty members, Graduate School fellowships, and/or other fellowships.

The majority of graduate students in Entomology are funded through Research Assistantship (RA) positions.  In most cases, this RA support comes from grants awarded to an individual faculty member for research in a specific area of study.  The average stipends for Master's and PhD students are equivalent to $16,000/yr and $18,000/yr, respectively. In addition, each student receives full health benefits, including subsidized dependent and dental care, and full tuition coverage.

Some prospective PhD students are eligible for a fellowships awarded by the Graduate School of the University of Minnesota. The purpose of these fellowships is to recruit outstanding students. Recipients of the fellowship in 2006-2007 received a fellowship stipend of $21,000 for the academic year, plus health benefits and full tuition.   Please see  http://www.grad.umn.edu/fellowships/incoming_students/index.html#GSF for eligibility requirements and application procedures for a Graduate School Fellowship.

At this time, Entomology is not able to offer Teaching Assistantship (TA) positions for full financial support but opportunities for partial support as a TA are available.
