Quiz 7 Instructions
  From your readings on the websites below and other websites, please answer the following questions. Answer the questions in an email message and put your name and quiz # in the email message subject. Answers should be emailed to pests@umn.edu. All enclosures must be labeled "last name, quiz #.doc or "last name, quiz #.rtf." Students may not copy each other's answers, although they are encouraged to discuss the assignment with their classmates. Please do not copy and paste text from the websites; instead, paraphrase or summarize your answers. Answers that appear too similar, or appear to be copied, will be given a grade of 0 that cannot be dropped.
Quiz 7 Assignment
  Develop an IPM program for lilac/ash borer, banded ash clearwing, and dogwood borer. Using the chapter by Herms in "IPM of Midwest Landscapes" indicate the degree day and plant phenological event when each of these three species are active. Use the entry on clearwing borers in "IPM of Midwest Landscapes" to learn some more details on the life history and management of clearwing borers. Use the research article for more details.

Your answer should be around one page long and include information on the following for each of the three species of borers:

  1. Scouting (1 pt)

  2. Damage symptoms (1 pt)

  3. Female/male emergence:
      a.   Average degree day (1.5 pts)
      b.   Month (1.5 pts)
      c.   Plant phenological event (see Herms; look for plant events that occur within the same time frame as adult moth emergence (none for banded ask borer)  (1 pt)
  4. Benefits to using traps and how traps work (1 pt)

  5. Pesticide choice and timing (1 pt)

  6. Biorational pesticide (1 pt)

  7. Tactic evaluation (how do you know if your control methods worked?) (1 pt)
