Research Interests
Veterinary entomology, population ecology, and integrated pest management of arthropods that affect large animals and people. Ongoing projects involve phenology, population dynamics, and management options for filth flies at organic dairies; and biting fly vectors of arboviruses and nematodes.
Teaching Interests
Veterinary Entomology (Ent 3281 in fall), Veterinary Parasitology (CVM 6202 in fall with Bert Stromberg), Insect Population Dynamics (Ent 5045 in alternate falls with Dave Andow), and Applied Experimental Design (Ent/Agro 5121 in spring with Nancy Ehlke). I also coordinate Ethics and Scientific Communication (Ent 8061 in fall with three others), and am in charge of Graduate Seminar (Ent 8300 in fall and spring).
Outreach Interests
Provide back-up identifications of arthropods for UM’s Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, and advise veterinarians, livestock producers and the general public on flies and other insects of veterinary importance. Technical advisor for Metropolitan Mosquito Control District, and member of University of Minnesota’s Equine Extension Advisory Team.
International Activities
Foreign exploration for parasites of invasive muscid flies in Russia and Kazakhstan, and ecology and management of filth flies in South America.
